The OLED needs the Kamikaze method
The Switch OLED is the hardest Nintendo Switch to modchip — and the reason is the board itself. Unlike the original V1/V2 and the Lite, the OLED doesn't give up its DAT0 data line at a friendly solder point. To tap that signal, the install uses the Kamikaze method: carefully exposing and gently scraping the DAT0 trace on the motherboard, then soldering the modchip's data wire directly to it.
That extra step is slow, delicate, magnified bench work with no margin for a slip — which is exactly why the OLED install starts higher than the other models and why it should never be a first-timer's job. Every OLED we mod is opened, installed under magnification, fully reassembled and reseated, then tested end-to-end before it ships back to you.

Which chip goes in an OLED?
Your OLED can take either of two modchips, and both rely on the same Kamikaze/DAT0 install. We'll recommend the best fit for your specific board at diagnostics.
INSTINCT-NX
A purpose-built modchip designed for the Switch family. A solid choice for the OLED when it suits your board.
PicoFly RP2040
The proven, widely used open-source RP2040-based chip. Reliable and well documented — the same chip family we install across the Switch lineup.
A modchip is a hardware mod. It taps the console's data lines directly, so it works independently of your OLED's system firmware version — there's nothing you need to update or downgrade before sending it in.
How the OLED compares
The OLED sits at the top of the difficulty ladder — it's the only model that requires the Kamikaze method and DAT0 trace work, which is reflected in its starting price. Here's where it lands against the other Switch models we mod.
| Model | Install method | Chip(s) | Difficulty | Starting price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Switch V1 / V2 | Solder install — two capacitors | PicoFly RP2040 | Easiest | $89.98 |
| Switch Lite | Standard solder install | PicoFly RP2040 | Moderate | $94.99 |
| Switch OLED You're here | Kamikaze method — DAT0 trace | INSTINCT-NX or PicoFly RP2040 | Hardest | $119.99 |

Switch OLED modchip FAQ
Why does modding a Switch OLED cost more than other models?
The OLED is the hardest Switch to mod. Its DAT0 data line isn't accessible at a convenient solder point the way it is on the V1/V2 or the Lite, so the install uses the Kamikaze method — exposing and scraping the DAT0 trace on the board to tap the signal. That's slower, more delicate work that carries more risk, which is reflected in the $119.99 starting price.
What is the Kamikaze method, and why does the OLED need it?
The Kamikaze method is an install technique specific to the Switch OLED. Because the OLED's board layout doesn't expose the DAT0 data line like earlier models do, the technician carefully exposes and scrapes the DAT0 trace, then solders the modchip's data wire directly onto it. It takes a steady hand and magnification — our OLED Kamikaze guide walks through it in detail.
INSTINCT-NX or PicoFly RP2040 for an OLED — which should I choose?
Both work on the OLED. The PicoFly RP2040 is the proven, widely used open-source chip; the INSTINCT-NX is a purpose-built modchip option. We'll recommend the best fit for your specific board at diagnostics. Either way, the install uses the Kamikaze/DAT0 approach the OLED requires.
Does it matter what firmware my OLED is on?
No. A modchip is a hardware mod — it taps the console's data lines directly and works independently of the system firmware version. You don't need to be on any particular firmware before sending your OLED in.
How long does it take, and what's the warranty?
Typical turnaround is 24–48 hours once your console reaches us. Every install is backed by a 180-day warranty with free return shipping, and you pay only after the work is completed.
Do I need to send my SD card or account details?
No. This is a hardware-only service. Please don't send SD cards, and we never need your Nintendo account or any login details — keep them.
I already had my OLED opened or attempted by someone else — can you still help?
Often yes, but a prior attempt can change the work involved. Reach out before mailing it in so we can assess the board first — start by contacting us.
