Symptoms of a Failed M92T36 or PI3USB
These two ICs sit between your USB-C port and the rest of the motherboard, so when one fails the console usually still turns on — it just stops doing one specific thing. Match your symptom:
Won't charge, or only charges sometimes. The console ignores the charger, charges only at certain cable angles, or shows the charging icon without gaining any percentage. This is the classic M92T36 failure.
Charges, but won't dock. The Switch charges fine handheld but nothing appears on the TV when docked. That split — charging works, docking doesn't — usually points at the PI3USB.
No video output on the TV. Dock lights up, console charges in the dock, but no image. Either IC can cause this, which is why we diagnose before ordering parts.
Charges only when the dock is plugged in a certain way, or the console gets hot at the port. Heat at the USB-C area under charge is a strong sign the charging IC is failing or already shorted.
It happened after using a third-party dock. Cheap docks that don't follow the USB-C power delivery spec are the number one killer of the M92T36. If your Switch died shortly after using one, this is almost certainly your repair.
Why the M92T36 Fails So Often
The M92T36 handles USB-C power delivery negotiation — it decides how much voltage and current the console accepts from whatever you plug in. When a non-compliant dock or charger pushes voltage the chip isn't expecting, it takes the hit to protect the rest of the board. That's the chip doing its job, but it means it's the first thing to die.
Replacing it is board-level work: the IC sits under a shield in a dense area of the motherboard, and it has to come off with hot air without disturbing the components around it, then go back on with every pad aligned. It's not a part swap, and it's why most shops quote you a full motherboard replacement instead. We've been doing this rework since 2010.
